Choosing shed building materials is only one of many decisions when trying to determine the right design and dimensions for you and your property. The most common materials used in shed construction are Vinyl and Wood. Below we consider the advantages and disadvantages of each shed material.

Vinyl Sheds

A choice that’s grown in popularity, vinyl sheds are well-known for their versatility and wide range of colors and finishes. Vinyl is a heavy-duty plastic that’s extremely resistant to weather, pests and water damage. If you want a shed that can withstand temperature extremes and requires minimal maintenance, a vinyl shed is the way to go. Although vinyl sheds tend to be more expensive upfront, you can save money overall due to the minimal maintenance required.

In terms of function, a vinyl shed can be used for the same purposes as a wood. The main challenges that a vinyl shed presents relate to its appearance and the level of customization that can be achieved. Many people prefer a painted wood shed, as they value a traditional appearance. Vinyl sheds tend to be limited in the number of sizes and designs. For example, if you are looking for a specific shape, or unusual window placement, it may be difficult with a vinyl shed.

Wood Sheds

Painted Wood is a versatile and time-honored option. Due to the way in which Wood sheds are made, it’s possible to enjoy a high degree of customization. Often times, people will coordinate their shed design to compliment their home or surrounding structures.

DuraTemp® wood siding is a popular option. DuraTemp® has a strong, plywood veneer core and a water-resistant resin coating. Although this material is durable, it will require regular inspections and maintenance. You may need to repaint every 3–7 years in order to maintain a moisture barrier and refresh the color from fading.

Wood is less resistant to pests – There’s always the risk of small animals like mice or insects such as termites compromising the shed. If you’re using your shed to store high-value equipment, a vinyl shed will be more resistant to unauthorized entry. When maintained properly, painted wood can be durable and long-lasting, but if you prefer a lower amount of maintenance, vinyl may be best.
